In this block-print graphic, Vogel depicts Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, also known as the Virgin of Guadalupe, as a pregnant mother holding an ear of corn. These unique details highlight her historical and cultural connection to Tonantzin, a pre-Columbian Nahua deity associated with motherhood, fertility, and the earth.
According to tradition, in 1531 the Virgin of Guadalupe appeared to Juan Diego, an Indigenous convert, on Tepeyac Hill in Mexico, and asked that a church be built there in her honor. Tepeyac was already a sacred site associated with Tonantzin, and this connection likely helped make the Virgin of Guadalupe more accessible and familiar to the Indigenous communities under colonial Spanish rule.
The story of the apparition that visited Juan Diego is believed to be the inspiration of the now world-famous image of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, and while mainstream representations often overlook her association with Tonantzin, Vogel’s depiction aims to honor this layered cultural and spiritual history.
